11.11 or 11 November, the " lonely party " or Singles' Day is celebrated. Born thanks to two students from the University of Nanjing in China, Guanggun Jie (光棍节) or Singles' Day dates back to the 1990s . The initial idea was to celebrate being single, considering the positive aspects. Soon other universities spread the idea and soon many more people began to recognize and celebrate this day.
The turning point of Singles' Day
In 2009 , one of the largest online stores in China, Alibaba , thanks to its founder Jack Ma, adopted the idea and transformed it into a day to shop, a bit like Black Friday . Shoppers on this popular site surpassed 168.2 billion yuan (US$25.4 billion) in spending during the 2017 celebrations.
Since then, Singles' Day has been a day in which people give themselves a gift, or give it to someone else, regardless of their relationship situation.
In Western countries the holiday is not yet particularly well known, except for those users who regularly make online purchases and are aware of the many days dedicated to shopping now advertised globally.
