Origins of Black Friday
Black Friday is the informal name used in the United States of America to indicate the Friday following Thanksgiving Day, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. But there is no univocal and incontrovertible answer regarding the origin of the name: there are rather different theories .
The first refers to the heavy traffic that fills the streets across America on that day, considering the greedy reductions, people crowd incessantly and there are often fights and injuries. The second refers to the ink used by US traders to record losses (in red) and profits (in black) in their books. On that day black was used almost exclusively, as it was a guarantee of rich profits. This term only began to come into vogue around the 1980s.
The custom of selling at special prices was consolidated systematically between the 1950s and 1960s. With these rich "timed" discounts it was therefore possible to stock up on splendid Christmas gifts that, on a day of normal prices, one could not so easily afford.
